ABOUT WORD CUP

Word Cup is an international word championship. All ages 14 and older are invited to try out online and test their verbal aptitude in a quiz format that tests vocabulary skill, spelling and quickness of mind.
Each contestant receives the same set of words, creating a championship of high academic merit.

Word Cup is hosted by eSpindle Learning, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located just north of San Francisco. Online vocabulary and spelling practice is at the heart of what we do, so we decided to provide the technology and administration for Word Cup.
Our vision is to grow Word Cup into the world's premier English vocabulary contest.

This community-powered event has a triple mission:

Honor excellence

Prizes are awarded in three age categories. Word Cup being a global and all-inclusive event, winners can claim to be the world's English vocabulary champions—a first-class title!

Reward self-improvement

Word Cup is fun for everyone, whether you are already at the champion level or not!
At Word Cup, you can win rewards by showing high level improvement from one Word Cup to the next.

Support literacy

A certain winner: Literacy! Word Cup strives to raise awareness and funds for some powerful literacy initiatives. The Word Cup community is designed as a platform that connects those of advanced verbal skills with those struggling.

SUPPORTED BY COMMUNITY

There is no entry fee. Making Word Cup's vision a reality, however, is a joint effort. For Word Cup to reach its potential, we are asking for a contribution to the Word Cup fund from every participant.

What is the Word Cup fund?

All contributions collected from participants are added to the Word Cup fund. These funds are managed in a dedicated account and overseen and audited by an independent accounting firm.

Word Cup funds cover event related expenses, boost the community prizes to the maximum level, and build the Word Cup Literacy Fund. The Literacy Fund is dispensed to the participating non-profits in the ratio determined by the nine highest ranking supporters.

Why would I contribute?

When many people support the event, good things will happen:
The Word Cup 2.0 prizes will reach their maximum value, and the Literacy Fund will grow.
The goal is to give a substantial boost to literacy non-profits on International Literacy Day (September 8th, 2010), the end of the 2010 Word Cup. Together we can do it!

You have to be a supporter of the Word Cup fund to receive the additional Word Cup 2.0 prizes (listed on the right/blue side of the table) when you score. The motto is "what goes around, comes around." Any Word Cup 2.0 prize unclaimed because the winner is not a supporter will instead be added to the Literacy Fund.
