Knock, knock... who's there? Students who want to learn!

Helms Middle School

Located in Richmond, CA, Helms Middle school is a Title1 school: Over 90 percent of students qualify for free lunch.
Most students speak a language other than English at home, and many have only basic or less than basic language skills.

Helms' principal, Harriet McLean says "The students are very sweet but we have a lot of work to do because they don't come from homes where they are prepared for school the way the middle class prepares their children for school."

eSpindle Learning is providing free licenses to all students to help them take a leap ahead.

Rewards wait for students who study the largest number of words via www.eSpindle.org.
Students also anticipate the Helms-exclusive online Spelling Bee, facilitated via eSpindle's partner site, www.SpellingBeeOnline.org.

"The best programs are the ones that provide instant feedback and review," says librarian Marilyn Jaquith, who assists students with using the school's computer resources.
"Programs like eSpindle are very effective. Students love to know where they're at and what exactly they need to do to improve."

"Students who don't know how to read and write can't go anywhere academically," says Ricardo Valenzuela, who has been one of the pioneers introducing eSpindle to his students.

Teachers enjoy delegating time intensive spelling word lists to the program.
They now only review the performance reports and can rest assured that eSpindle will provide customized tutoring until words are reliably anchored in long-term memory, regardless of whether that requires three or  99 repetitions.
