GLOBAL ONLINE WORD CUP

The 2008 Word Cup has drawn to a close!

The 2008 Champion of Champions is Jane Windham, a 69 year old retiree who is currently traveling around the world. She participated in the finals via her laptop from the Philippines and scored 163 words, plus 57 bonus points..

“I’ve always loved language. Every new word I learn adds flavor to my life,” Windham said following her outstanding performance during the finals. “I collect words like other people collect wine or artwork.” Windham, who registered for the event under the name “spellhound,” says she’s never been in a spelling bee and would not enjoy competing live on stage. “Word Cup is private. I can try out anywhere, right here on my laptop, with only the supervisor watching me during finals. It’s a fun event, and I enjoyed all three rounds.”

No matter what your age is or where you live, you're welcome to join the Word Cup - an annual, global, online vocabulary challenge for all ages!

Get ready for next year! Word Cup word games are available throughout the year and regularly updated. And while you're here, make sure to register, so you'll be automatically invited for the 2009 Word Cup.

The winners of the 2008 Word Cup have already voted how funds from the Word Cup Literacy Campaign will be distributed:

36% will go to nonprofit Room to Read,
33% to Unicef’s “Girls too!” initiative (UNGEI),
  12% to Benetech’s Bookshare project,
11% to the ePals Foundation/in2books, and
8% to Proliteracy’s National Book Scholarship Fund.

Some of the winners expressed interest to do some more fundraising. In addition, a lot of folks are just now learning about the Word Cup and the campaign; so we decided to keep the campaign open until the end of the year to allow for additional online donations.

Please take a moment to think about what your education, and your ability to read with ease and to write with confidence has brought to your life.
If every visitor to this site donated the suggested $25 we could really make a huge difference!
Of course, any amount you are comfortable with is very appreciated. Thank you!
