Long introduction
About eSpindle:back to top
eSpindle Learning, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization started from
parent initiative, has created an effective vocabulary tutoring
service.
eSpindle's mission is to help people from all walks of life spin a
rich vocabulary as a foundation of lifelong success. We envision a
day when everyone has access to a powerful vocabulary to support
complex thought and confident communication.
eSpindle sustains itself by providing unlimited
online tutoring service for an annual membership fee.
Every
paid membership supports a scholarship for a disadvantaged
student.
Why eSpindle is unique: eSpindle provides
efficient, continuous and effective tutoring in
English vocabulary,
pronunciation and
spelling.
Students can choose between a
spelling module and a more challenging
vocabulary quiz.
Drawing on a database of 100,000 words, our patent-pending
technology creates personalized quizzes, allowing users and teachers
to also add words for priority study. eSpindle
manages quick and entertaining learning sessions that drastically
reduce study time. The program guarantees results with regular use.
Words that are
are hard for the student are repeated over subsequent sessions until they are
entered correctly every time. Continuously updated performance
reports allow for detailed review of learning accomplishments.
Every one of eSpindle's
vocabulary games is custom tailored
to the member's needs, since
eSpindle provides 100% personalized tutoring via
patent-pending technology.
eSpindle's innovative Testudy™ technology practices an integrated test-study-test approach that
guarantees that words will be learned for life.
How? The program initially determines which words need further
reinforcement and then practices them with the student until they have
been entered correctly three times in a row - whether that takes
three or 300 repetitions!
Lots
of supplementary free resources (free trial, free Word Cup practice
quiz, word list
wiki, word root directory,
fun facts etc.) are also provided.
What people say about eSpindle:
The Parents' Choice Foundation called eSpindle "a spelling universe"
as they awarded their highly prestigious Educational Quality Seal to
www.eSpindle.org in spring of 2006.

this program after careful classroom evaluation, calling it
“powerful and well-designed.”

eSpindle in the
classroom:
Classrooms benefit from additional site license features. Teacher
can add words and monitor performance from one location.
Progress is measured at all times and in
minute detail, and performance is easily assessed
without the need for separate tests.
Age appropriate vocabulary and spelling acquisition are not only
essential to raise confident readers and writers, but also play a
central role in the NCLB standards for all states. In California,
for example, spelling
accounts for 6% of the annual NCLB test, grades 2-8!
Description from the North Carolina Department of Public
Instruction
[1-12 ELA]eSpindle provides an
online approach for the development of spelling and vocabulary
skills. After logging in, students start a quiz drawn from a
database of more than 100,000 words, organized into grade-level
groupings.
Students have an option for the number of words in a quiz, ranging
from fifteen to 500 words. Teachers also can add their own word
lists.
Students first hear a word (which can be clicked for repeated
pronunciation), read a definition clue, and view an example sentence
with a blank for the missing word. Sentences can be clicked for
audio reading.
Students type the spoken word in a box that utilizes a large font.
Two attempts are allowed before the correct spelling is shown.
Correct answers are reinforced with a positive random sound and the
prompt to go to the next word.
After correctly spelling a word (or viewing the answer after
misspelling a word), additional links appear to ThinkMap’s Visual
Thesaurus, answers.com (for additional definitions), the
Merriam-Webster dictionary, and Wikipedia.
The program tracks misspelled words and repeats them at periodic
intervals in subsequent quizzes.
Students can view their own progress reports, including words
spelled correctly, incorrectly, and skipped.
From the Preferences page, they can set personal goals and switch to
another grade-level quiz.
Teachers have options for setting up
classroom lists with additional spelling words, reviewing individual
student progress, and assigning individual student word lists. When
words are included by the teacher, they are presented first,
followed by words drawn from the database.
Weaknesses: None found.
Strengths: This powerful and
well-designed online approach to learning words empowers students to
control the rate of their own spelling development and expertise.
The word list for the program is impressive and growing.
Uses: eSpindle would make a
valuable addition to any school’s tools for reinforcing spelling.
The program is well suited for both individual and classroom needs.
It also can be used as practice for spelling bees, as support for
English language learners, and for SAT preparation.
